I got up early and let my bags carry me down the road, interestingly every one else was being carried up. I caught the hypodermic bus and it injected me into the countryside (where birds frighten scarecrows and old men talk young), my shadow walked right round the garden’s edge even though a line of footprints took a short cut.

I had to leave myself in one place and collect myself later. I then did exactly the same thing (in a different place) in the evening. While I stood like a convict pretending to be the gaoler, time moved like hay bales falling off a lorry as it took a roundabout too quickly and the clouds overhead resembled snakes eating their own tails.

I waited for the lamppost shadow to cross the road before leaving the house. I knew June would be leaving just after and we had each placed our hands on the telephone by the front door. When I entered the room that everyone can enter I hung up my last thoughts and kept on my coat. I later found three coins in a pocket and made a face.

I worked in the almost autumn garden all morning. June meanwhile went through her wardrobes, finding inside lost echoes of family and fleeting shadows which had been unpacked when we first moved in – only some were cast by her and me. I called from outside that I was an archer shooting arrows straight up in the air.
Pete Walks Off
I walked up the chimpanzee footprint road balancing what looked from a distance like a question mark with barbed wire wound round it. I considered this to be ancestral and accepted a note offered to me at the corner but didn’t read it until later in the day. By then I had a glove puppet on my foot and my hands tied to a large wooden wheel.

June walked to town beside me very early in the morning, she had a chandelier floating over her head and I, as is often the case, had bare wires protruding through the ceiling. I had to open up a shop while she went off to fill bags with objects that change every time someone looks in at them. I joked that they could be called mirrors.

I got up early to follow someone else’s footsteps down the road, behind a third person was following me. I met the fourth person after the bus was pegged out on a clothes line and then got in quickly when it started to rain. We talked of the future dressed up as the past before I had to come home, a family of house sparrows clinging to my hat.

Back home to stick telegraph poles in a pin cushion. June had dreamt of standing on the quayside watching a large ship approach. I would have been more interested in the small ships going out to meet it. As a joke I pretended to be a tree and she pulled an axe from a hand reflected in the hall mirror.
Landscape In A Tree
I left the house immediately after a breakfast of old calendar dates, the house then ran one way and I ran the other. I reached a building on crutches and crawled inside, staying most of the day – I only left it briefly to question an old man who was leaning against a gate (we had to part when the gate started leaning against him).
Man Emerging From Undergrowth
I was home all day, my feet in a bucket of quick sand. I used quick hands to make signs only I can decipher. Outside the Alps moved by on legs borrowed from a wolfhound last owned by George Washington – they were remembering when they were higher than the Himalayas. I invented in my a head an immortal shadow.
